Alice, Shaken and Definitely Stirred by Paula Smith

This uplifting romantic comedy takes you on Alice’s journey, interweaving her relationships with real-life characters and dreams involving her favourite romantic screen idols. Lamenting the loss of her long-term partner and having been made redundant, Alice makes a New Year’s resolution to get on with life, and definitely without a man. But things don’t quite go to plan. As her Aunt Betty says, ‘Men, dear, are like buses, there are none on the horizon then three come along at once.’ Alice certainly is shaken and definitely stirred.

My Thoughts

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is one of those laugh out loud, utterly charming reads that really lifts your mood. It is exactly what I needed to read right now, and I have no doubt others will feel the same way.

Alice is a rather quirky character who you come to love immediately. After losing her long term partner alongside her job, Alice is makes herself a promise – in the form of a new years resolution. She decides to take control of her life once again, and to do so without the interference of a man!. But in typical rom-com fashion, Alice’s plans don’t run smoothly…

She is a big fan of James Bond, along with various other male icons, which she frequently dreams about, allowing her to escape in to her own little fantasy world. This suits her just fine, and has no impact on her life, that is until Alice finds herself with three potential suitors all fighting for her attention at the same time. As Alice drifts between the men in her dreams and the men in her reality, this makes for some truly hilarious moments and interactions between them all.

I really loved how light hearted and easy going this book was. The central character of Alice is so easy to connect with and likeable from the start. She has a rather tight knit group of friends, which her ex is still a part of, something that doesn’t really help with her healing process, but I’m glad the author kept her within this group and didn’t have her shying away following their break up.

The story flows wonderfully, and introduces you to a cast of bright, vibrant characters along the way. Full of humour, love, and a bit of fantasising thrown in to the mix, this makes for a truly enjoyable read.
