The First Man
Shane
Do you want to know what it means to live like me?
It means being forced not to look at him, not to touch him, not to be left alone in the same room as him.
Not to seek him out. Not to want him.
Not to love him.
Do you know how it feels to spend your entire life pretending to be someone else? Do you know what it’s like to love someone who doesn’t want to be loved?
I’ll tell you how it feels.
It feels as if you’re living in constant torment: you know which path you should follow, but you also know that, if you follow that path, you can never turn back.
And I can’t do that to him.
Every day I come back, because I know that he’s waiting for me.
Every day I promise him that he will never have to live without me.
Andy
Do you know what it means to live like me?
It means being forced not to touch him, not to kiss him, not to be able to leave the room while he’s still in it.
Not to breathe him in, not to lust after him.
Not to love him.
Do you know how it feels to spend your entire life pretending to be someone else? Do you know what it’s like to love the only person you’re not allowed to love?
I’ll tell you how it works.
You can’t seem to feel anything other than him; when you walk away, you know that you’re turning your back on the only thing that’s good in your life.
Yet you still walk away.
Every day I leave, knowing that he will be standing there, watching.
Every day I ask him to promise me that I will never have to live without him.
My Thoughts
The First Man is the second book in the Connemara with Love series and in this instalment we meet Shane and Andy in this wonderful friends to lovers story.
Shane and Andy find it impossible to fight the attraction between them, along with the overwhelming need to be with one another. However, they come to the conclusion that being together isn’t a viable option, only a dream of theirs that they cannot make a reality.
However the pull soon becomes too intense, and they find themselves unable to hold back any more and soon enough they are giving in to their desires. But this doesn’t provide them with the happy ending they both crave. Instead, they find themselves throwing even more obstacles in between each other than they did before.
This was such an incredibly powerful, captivating story that I found myself reading late in to the night. I love how refreshingly unique the storyline is – and the varying worries and troubles any couple can face, but the overriding fear of rejection really came to light in this novel.
The storyline itself was a heart warming romance, with the time – old back and forth, will they won’t they plot, but this story really does come in to its own with the lead characters being within the LGBTQ community, and we get a much deeper insight as to how couples within this community are often made to feel.
The characters were wonderful, and I found myself well and truly invested in their lives and their happiness as their story progressed. Both Shane and Andy are such likeable characters, with their own individual personalities, which in turn adds extra depth to this fantastic story.
A beautifully written, heart warming story that I adored!.
