Sometimes your past just won’t let go…
As a heat wave grips the country, DS Jenna Morgan is called to a domestic incident at the home of a young family in Ironbridge.
Pregnant Imelda Cheetham-Epstein has been found unconscious by her husband, Zak with serious head injuries.
When Jenna arrives on the scene, she discovers something even more disturbing – the couple’s eleven-month-old son, Joshua, is missing and the race against time begins to find him.
Is this an accident or something more sinister?
Are the two incidents linked?
Or has something in the Cheetham-Epstein’s past caught up with them?
Diane Saxon is back with a gripping new psychological crime novel, perfect for fans of Cara Hunter and Carol Wyer.
My Thoughts
The Ex is the fourth book in this series which follows DS Jenna Morgan, and as a reader who has followed the entire series, I would certainly recommend reading all of the books prior to this one to get a full picture of the characters and the story so far, however you can still easily read this instalment as a standalone novel.
Jenna is in a rather good place in her life at present. She is settled in a relationship with Adrian Hall, who is Chief Crime Prosecutor, along with Jenna’s sister and housemate Fliss who is now dating Jenna’s detective partner DC Mason Ellis. As they are all slowly piecing their lives back together following the kidnapp in the previous book, a new case comes to the team.
Emily Shenton is a woman who is obsessed with her ex boyfriend Zak, and despite him leaving the company in which they both worked for following their break up two years ago, Emily began stalking Zak. She finally started taking medication and counselling, that is until she finds herself at a company ball she over hears that Zak is now married to a woman called Imelda, and Emily finds herself having a meltdown in the ladies bathroom. When her old obsession comes back with a vengance, Zak finds his life falling apart around him, and it is down to Jenna and Mason to solve the case.
This was a fascinating read from the start. As always, Diane Saxon never fails to bring us a truly captivating story, full of complex characters and a truly riveting storyline, this is a book that had me well and truly hooked to the very last page. The characters were wonderfully developed, each of them having well fleshed out personalities and their own life stories, all of which add to the depth of this brilliant book.
Fast paced, thrilling, and full of twists and turns throughout, this is definitely a book you struggle to put down.
